Nelson Croom reduces learners' emissions
"There is still time to avoid the worst impacts of climate change, if we take strong action now," wrote Sir Nicholas Stern in his hard-hitting report on The Economics of Climate Change published towards the end of 2006.
70% reduction in emissions
The Stern report outlined the rate that emissions need to be cut from current consumption to stabilise greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere, projecting a 70% reduction by 2050.
There are several ways to cut emissions, but some are business opportunities in low-carbon, high efficiency goods and services. The report highlighted that in 14% of energy emissions in 2000 were due to transport. Reducing business travel by car or plane is now a high priority.
2000 new learners each month
This made us think about what part Nelson Croom can play to help influence climate change. Perhaps the biggest contribution we make to the reduction of carbon emissions is when people choose to learn online, rather than attending a face to face training course.
Nelson Croom now registers over 2000 new learners each month on its courses. That means that over 2000 people are sitting at their desks and not travelling to a face to face training session.
"There is no doubt that elearning helps reduce pollution. Not only are travel budgets reduced but carbon emissions are slashed when staff no longer have to travel - usually by car - to and from training courses. Learning from a computer at your desk can really make a difference." Tony Short,Technical Director, Nelson Croom
So e-learning reduces pollution. What else can we do?
Switch-off
We have new corridor lighting: motion sensors detect when people are in the corridor and only switch lights on when required. We have a low energy heating system that uses a pump to take heat out of the atmosphere. At night we switch off all our PCs to reduce the electricity we use.
We can't claim to be saving the planet, but we hope that we can have a positive contribution to the issue, no matter how small-scale it might seem.

About Nelson Croom
Nelson Croom creates and publishes online learning courses. We work in partnership with companies, professional associations and other organisations. We believe that learning works best when it engages and motivates people. Different people learn in different ways, building on varying levels of knowledge and experience. In a Nelson Croom course the learner is always in charge of what they do and how they do it.
