Record registrations in August for diabetes programme

Over 1100 learners registered in August for the Bournemouth Diabetes Learning Programme - one of the highest numbers of monthly learner registrations for a Nelson Croom course. Other keen learners this year include those with AAT Skillcheck and Deloitte Central Europe.

The programme is provided by the Bournemouth Diabetes and Endocrine Centre (BDEC), in partnership with Diabetes UK and with the support of Sanofi Aventis. It is designed to help people with type 1 diabetes learn about carbohydrate counting and insulin dose adjustment. The content is based on the BERTIE intensive education programme which has been running since 1999. It provides an educational resource to provide learners with the information that they need to make decisions about their diabetes management.

One in ten diabetics suffer from Type 1 diabetes, and the incidence in children is rising at a rate of 3 to 4 % each year. Type 1 diabetes is a metabolic condition that results in increased blood glucose (commonly called sugar) level due to a total lack of the hormone insulin. Having diabetes creates many challenges and the more that is understood, the easier it is to interpret blood glucose readings and adjust insulin appropriately. The course enables learners to more closely match their insulin to their food and lifestyle, manage their diabetes with fewer restrictions, and share their experiences with others.

Over 200 people completed the pilot scheme for the course. It is now planned that the programme will be freely available for one year and will be reviewed in light of feedback received over that time. So far, feedback from learners has been resoundingly positive:

"Very nice and user-friendly way of checking the understanding of the basics! I enjoyed the quiz."

"I have really enjoyed working my way through this course. I have revised my knowledge ... I like the interactive parts."

"This is a brilliant educational tool"

"Your learning programme is fantastic, wish it had been around years ago!"

About BDEC
The Bournemouth Diabetes and Endocrine Centre (BDEC) has been working with patients to develop ideas and programmes which not only reduce the risk of complications, but also allows them to reduce the negative impact of living with diabetes, including reducing the risk of hypoglycaemia.
